Transaction History

Trade #67... July 13, 2013: To Toronto: MIN 4 2013 (Eric Roy D); To Anaheim: LAK 4 2014, TOR 7 2015

This was a fairly early 4th rounder and after missing out on a good CHL defenseman I was open to adding a pick. I had mixed reports on Roy, but the good things I had read about him made me really want to add him. This deal actually happened a few minutes before Anaheim's turn to pick, so I had a few moments to consult my list and make the deal. There were a few backup plans if Roy slipped past me, so it was worth moving up.

Trade #66... July 13, 2013: To Toronto: STL 3 2014, COL 4 2013 (Viktor Crus Rydberg C); To Colorado: BUF 3 2013 (Jordan Subban D), TOR 6 2014

I was hoping to grab Subban at #90, although I figured Winnipeg would get him before me. I wasn't ready to grab him here - I wasn't even really thinking he would actually go here - so when Colorado came knocking I was ready to trade. Needless to say I was quite surprised by the pick. Oh well. I really like Rydberg and have a 3rd rounder next year for a 6th, so hopefully that part of the exchange will even things out nicely.

Trade #65... July 12, 2013: To Toronto: Niklas Backstrom G: To Phoenix: TOR 5 2013 (Evan Campbell C), $1,000,000

Joshua Raines and I had talked about Backstrom off and on. I wasn't interested in paying much in the way of picks or prospects, and he had settled on getting his $1 million for letting him walk. I figured the deal was dead. Then on the evening of the draft it was announced that Carolina had dealt their only starting goalie, Cory Schneider to Boston. I figured Carolina would almost certainly outbid me for any free agent goalies, and may even make a play to get Backstrom back. Too risky, so I offered to cover the $1 million to Phoenix and throw in a 5th rounder. Deal was immediately accepted, processed, and with Backstrom's agent in the room I was able to quickly complete a two-year extension. Probably the easiest deals I've ever made.

Trade #64... July 11, 2013: To Toronto: CAR 4 2013 (Anton Slepyshev LW); To Chicago: Steven Zalewski C/LW, Blake Pietila LW

Since I was heading to Vegas for the draft I was mainly interested in adding a pick or two. Chicago had asked about Zalewski in the past, and Pietila was a guy I figured he would like, so I made this offer. On paper it looks like I may get hosed! Slepyshev is a long shot, but I like his upside. The sad thing is that Pietila is pretty much built the same way and is considered by many to be a can't miss NHLer on the fourth line. Oops!

Trade #63... July 8, 2013: To Toronto: BUF 3 2013 (Jordan Subban D), TOR 3 2013 (NIklas Hanssen D); To San Jose: TOR 2 2013 (Nicholas Baptiste RW)

Two third rounders for a very late second rounders sounded like two rolls of the dice for one to me, so I had to take this. Seeing that I later dealt the Buffalo pick for what became Jordan Subban is a bit disappointing as I had hoped to get him with the Toronto pick.

Trade #62... July 8, 2013: To Toronto: LAK 4 2014; To Calgary: Daniel Sedin LW

I had no plans to resign Sedin and I felt that the brothers would either sign together or not at all. Andrew had paid a bundle for Henrik and might have nothing to show for him after losing in his conference finals. I have a great trading history with Andrew and felt that if he got Daniel from me he might have a shot at getting them both under contract. After winning the cup I was feeling like I needed some good kharma and who better to help out than a guy who has made some real handsome offers to me in the past. Hope they work out as planned for you Andrew and see you in the finals!

Trade #61... May 12, 2013: To Toronto: Chad Larose LW/RW; To Carolina: Toby Petersen C/LW/RW, Derek Grant C

I had considered making an offer to Colorado for Larose in the offseason because I like his skating ability, versatility, and defensive responsibility. After making the Sedin deal I was completely interested in adding for a deep playoff run and Larose was a player who was signed beyond this year, so it made sense to chase him. Ron made this one pretty easy - he wanted a mid-grade prospect and a veteran for the minors. He had once advised me to ask for Grant in a deal with LA, so he was interested when I offered him up. The veteran was a no-brainer. I had outbid him for Peterson a few years back and had put Peterson in the minors when he wanted him as a fourth liner. His contract was up and would not be resigned, but the Hurricanes resigned him shortly after the deal. Everyone goes home happy.

Trade #60... May 8, 2013: To Toronto: Daniel Sedin LW; To Buffalo: Steve Downie RW, BUF 5 2013 (Wiley Sherman C)

Buffalo had just dealt Henrik Sedin and came offering up Daniel for Downie and a early round pick. I was not interested in moving a pick particularly, but had made Downie available for quite a while. I was actually wanting to add an early round pick to shore up my draft selections this year for Downie, so it took me a while to realize that Roger was offering a legitimate shot at chasing the cup hard. So this is the first big-time rental player deal I made. [Note: it paid off!!! Cup champs 2013!]

Trade #59... April 29, 2013: To Toronto: Hugh Jessiman LW/RW, COL 4 2013, OTT 6 2013 (Anton Cederholm D); To Colorado: Zac Rinaldo LW, Morgan Ellis D, TOR 7 2014, $100,000

Morgan Ellis becomes the first ever draft pick that I selected to get traded by me. I advertised the availability of Rinaldo, Ellis, and a few others and Colorado came calling. I was mainly looking for picks and to upgrade the top six for the Marlies. Jessiman brings more scoring punch and the pick exchange is a nice touch long term. In the process I make some space on the prospect list by moving a D-man who would likely have gotten buried when I activated him. I hope he does better with Colorado.

Trade #58... April 26, 2013: To Toronto: Kimmo Timonen D, SJS 6 2013 (Alexandre Belanger G); To San Jose: Konrad Abeltshauser D, TOR 4 2014

Man it hurt giving up Abeltshauser, but I wanted to make this deal to improve my blueline. Kampfer was struggling and Harrison was, too. Timonen is extremely reliable and the thinking was he would solidify the back end.

Trade #57... April 4, 2013: To Toronto: Steven Kampfer D; To Nashville: NSH 4 2013

This one was a pretty simple deal. I was having penalty problems and wanted to bring in an extra option on the blueline to spell off Jay Harrison. Kampfer is young enough to be sent to the minors if he is not the solution, so this was a low-risk deal.

Trade #56... February 24, 2012: To Toronto: Olivier Magnan D; To Ottawa: Alex Berry RW

Uh... two teams filling holes in their rosters... If Magnan plays in AsHL we have had some injury problems!

Trade #55... November 11, 2012: To Toronto: VAN 3 2014; To Vancouver: Aaron Rome D

Aaron Rome is a solid bottom pair defenseman but I think Jay Harrison may have him beat this year. I was talking to Mike Henderson and mentioned he was available for a fourth. Since he did not have a fourth this year he offered a third rounder for the following year. Hard to turn down. Mighty classy of Mike to up the offer for waiting a year for a return.

Trade #54... November 10, 2012: To Toronto: Aaron Palushaj RW ; To Colorado: Alexei Ponikarovsky LW/RW

This was a tough one. Palushaj has some decent upside. He is small, but if he can learn to handle the physical aspects of the game may develop into a decent 2nd line winger. Otherwise he will be an energy guy on the fourth line or a real good AsHLer. Ponikarovsky has been real good in Toronto, but was probably going to be buried on the fourth line. Colorado is pretty sure he can play on the third line. I hope this is a win-win all around. For now I just hope Palushaj can be a really good Marlie. He will fill the skill gap being left by Tlusty and McLeod.

Trade #53... September 3, 2012: To Toronto: BUF 5 2013, $100,000; To Buffalo: Brett Carson D, Cody McLeod LW/RW

It was a case of wanting to make some room in the AsHL. After two years of regular season domination followed by first round chokes, the Marlies followed up by barely making the playoffs, then choking again. This means a slight shift in philosophy... more youth in the AsHL, so these gentlemen will depart to make way for the younger guys. That could mean a rough year for the Marlies.

Trade #52... August 7, 2012: To Toronto: $1000; To Carolina: Justin Courtnall LW (P)

I had mentioned in an article that Courtnall was on the bubble, meaning there was a decent chance that he could be released, so Ron got all sentimental and offered up 10% of what I had paid for him a couple of years before. Whatever.

Trade #51... July 21, 2012: To Toronto: PHX 5 2012 (Dominic Toninato C), DAL 5 2012 (Mike McKee D); To Dallas: SJS 4 2012 (Colton Porayko D)

This one was a case of looking at my draft board and realizing that a ton of guys I liked would still be around in the 5th round because my draft list was looking unlike anyone else's - for whatever that is worth. So when Jason and I went back and forth and settled on this deal it seemed to be a good one. I had been hoping to snag Nick Ebert with the SJS pick, but figured it was too early and I'd grab him later, but Roger scooped me. According to the Ebert-haters out there I should be happy he did, but time will tell. I like the guys I added, so no big loss.

Trade #50... July 11, 2012: To Toronto: Reid Boucher LW, SJS 4 2012 (Colton Porayko D); To Colorado: BOS 3 2012 (Andreas Anathasiou LW), WPG 4 2012 (Matt Grzelcyk D)

I really liked Boucher last year at the draft and had cussed Patrick out a bit for getting one of "my guys." He has a long memory because he offered him up in his epic run up to the draft in which about 80% of all the draft picks in the league temporarily ran through Colorado. I think both parties were real happy with this deal because we jockeyed positions a bit, and I came away with a guy I liked before the draft even started.

Trade #49... March 18, 2012: To Toronto: Mike Commodore D; To San Jose: TOR 5 2014

At the deadline I was just on the cusp of being a playoff team, so it was time to add a veteran. Kurt Fullmore offered up Commodore for a very reasonable price and everyone went home happy... and Commodore helped us squeak into the playoffs.

Trade #48... March 5, 2012: To Toronto: Keith Aulie D, Reilly Smith RW (P), CGY 1 2012 (Scott Laughton C); To Calgary: Steve Eminger D

This was not a deal I wanted to make, but Andrew really knows how to get what he wants. He enquired about Eminger and I said I really wasn't interested unless it included certain pieces. I did not expect him to come back with an offer at all, but instead he came back with 2 pieces that I lhad suggested and Aulie to boot. It was a case of rolling the dice that Aaron Rome would come up and do a decent enough job, while McDonagh takes on more responsibility. I was still not a playoff team, so I figured this was a decent risk because it's a real good long-term deal and I wasn't going to make the playoffs anyway... or was I?

Trade #47... February 7, 2012: To Toronto: Ryan Johnson C, CGY 4 2012 (Seth Griffiths RW); To Buffalo: Michal Handzus C

Handzus had a contract that was about to expire and was not performing up to his ratings, so it looked like it was time for him to go. I was starting to play well enough that I wasn't willing to ship him out of town for futures only. Roger took the upgrade and added a nice pick to the deal. Johnson came in and out of the lineup and did the job well enough on the fourth line, and the Leafs kept on winning. Not sure how that happened, but it did. Every time I dealt away a decent player we seemed to do better in the standings.

Trade #46... February 5, 2012: To Toronto: MIN 1 2012 (Zemgus Girgensons C), Konrad Abeltshauser D (P), Aaron Boogard RW; To San Jose: Daniel Alfredsson RW, CHI 3 2012 (Jon Gillies G), TOR 6 2013

Next... on Hoarders... GMs who like to enter the draft with 3 first rounders. This was a tough deal to make because Alfie had been good the year before and was brought in to add that veteran presence up front. But the Leafs were hurting badly in the standings and the Sharks were on the rise, so it made a ton of sense. It turned out that for me less was more - we started winning - and for Kurt it seemed that I had thrown him an anchor. Funny how hindsight makes a decent deal look kinda lopsided. But I have to say that adding Zemgus and Konrad in the same deal is awesome on so many levels. I had tried to get Konrad from Buffalo in the summer and failed, but managed to add him. I like his potential, and he just has one of those can't-miss hockey names... just like Zemgus!

Trade #45... January 11, 2012: To Toronto: BOS 3 2012 (Andreas Anathasiou LW) and Daniel Brodin RW (P); To Boston: Carlo Colaiacovo D and TOR 7 2013

This deal went back and forth and I screwed it up so many times I felt compelled to throw in the 7th rounder just to show Erik I'm not a complete idiot [yeah, I know...]. Anyways, this deal was all about making room for Ryan McDonagh, which turned out to be a good thing. The pick was good value, and Daniel Brodin... well he's a long shot, but I figured I already had one Brodin and this one is an edgy player.

Trade #44... January 2, 2012: To Toronto: Jason Williams C/W; To Detroit: Morten Madsen C/W, TOR 6 2012 (Brady Austin C)

I had a brutal start to the year and figured another veteran body up front for insurance would allow me some roster flexibility. I really did not expect to use this guy more than 20 - 30 games, but he was just so darned effective.

Trade #43... November 1, 2011: To Toronto: LAK 5 2013; To Los Angeles: Arron Asham RW

Can't trade with one twin and ignore the other. Asham was looking for more playing time and Nate obliged. Good deal for both sides as far as I was concerned.

Trade #42... October 28, 2011: To Toronto: Nate Thompson C/LW; To Anaheim: TOR 4 2012 (Trevor Carrick D)

I was looking to add a re-rate as most of my guys who had good seasons were already good NHLers. Mark had been flogging Thompson a bit so I offered up a pick and said I'd give him a re-rate. Mark was kind enough to send him my way. Unfortunately Thompson had a bit of a rough go for me and even sat a few games. Hopefully he will pick it up and be a quality 4th liner who can move up a line from time to time.

Trade #41... October 27, 2011: To Toronto: WPG 4 2012 (Matt Grzelcyk D); To Winnipeg: Chris Higgins LW

I really like Chris Higgins, but it was looking like he would get buried on the fourth line. He looked very good for the Canucks at the end of the year and he may one day garner a re-rate. I didn't feel I would ever be able to make that kind of investment in him, so he was moveable. I hope he continues his great play and gets that re-rate.

Trade #40... July 10, 2011: To Toronto: Shane McColgan RW; To Carolina: Sergei Shirokov LW/RW, TOR 6 2011 (Daniel Pribyl C)

This could turn out to be a "why bother" kinda trade, but I really liked McColgan and it was a chance to get something for Shirokov. I liked Pribyl, too, so I would have been okay if this had not happened. But what the heck.

Trade #39... July 9, 2011: To Toronto: NYR 4 2011 (Jonathan Racine D), CLB 7 2011 (Max Everson D); To Columbus: OTT 4 2011 (Seth Ambroz RW)

I made this deal thinking I would be able to grab Shane McColgan, but Carolina scooped me. At least I helped out my buddy Greg to get his man. My good friend Ron was mighty decent to trade me McColgan the next morning.

Trade #38... July 9, 2011: To Toronto: EDM 2 2011 (Ty Rattie LW), OTT 4 2011 (Seth Ambroz RW); To Ottawa: WSH 1 2011 (Joseph Morrow D)

I wanted a forward and it was looking like a run of d-men was coming up, so I rolled the dice on this deal. Love Rattie, so I'm happy with this deal. I ended up flipping the 4th rounder later.

Trade #37... July 7, 2011: To Toronto: WSH 1 2011 (Joseph Morrow D), LAK 3 2012; To Pittsburgh: Sergei Bobrovsky G

Less than a year after signing Bobrovsky I was dealing him away. He had struggled down the stretch in the NHL as well as in the AsHL, and then the NHL Flyers added Bryzgalov for a huge term. I was worried Bobrovsky would head back to Russia when his deal was up, so I jumped at the chance to add a first rounder, especially since I figured the Penguins would give him an NsHL shot. Little did I know they had already made a couple other blockbusters involving goalies. Overall, this deal turned out pretty good as I flipped the pick down for a prospect I really like.

Trade #36... March 12, 2011: To Toronto: MTL 6 2011 (Petr Placek RW); To Montreal: Ryan Bayda LW

I hated helping Montreal when we were duking it out for a playoff spot, but Rick was persistent and offered up a decent pick. If you are scoring at home, I had only given up a 7th rounder a few weeks before.

Trade #35... February 25, 2011: To Toronto: Jozef Vacicek C; To Tampa Bay: NSH 4 2011 (Olivier Archambault LW)

Another veteran pickup to make a run for the playoffs. A decent price for a late season rental.

Trade #34... February 22, 2011: To Toronto: NSH 1 2011 (Ryan Strome C), NSH 4 2013; To Nashville: Marcel Mueller LW, Justin Abdelkader LW, MTL 4 2012 (Nick Ebert D), TOR 3 2013

At the time the first rounder was projecting to be around #11 or #12 and Richard was not at all impressed with the draft class. He was looking for a solid player and liked Abdelkader and Mueller a lot. Being a Red Wing, it is hard to say what will happen with Abdelkader as he could end up being a late bloomer offensively because of they way they develop their players. If that happens then this deal doesn't look quite so bad for Richard, but honestly this one was a big win for Toronto. Shortly after the deal players like Huberdeau started getting a ton of buzz and suddenly a weak class looked pretty good indeed.

Trade #33... February 13, 2011: To Toronto: Ryan Bayda LW; To Calgary: TOR 7 2012 (Kenton Helgeson D)

I was looking for a depth player down the stretch and Bayda filled in admirably in limited minutes for a few games. No big deal.

Trade #32... February 7, 2011: To Toronto: Cody McLeod LW/RW, NSH 6 2011 (Travis Boyd RW); To Nashville: Tom Pyatt LW, TOR 5 2012 (Nick Walters C)

I wanted a tougher winger for the 4th line and Richard wanted futures. This deal was a wash. Both Pyatt and McLeod appear destined to be good AsHLers who get called up from time to time.

Trade #31... January 24, 2011: To Toronto: MTL 4 2012 (Nick Ebert D); To Montreal: Matt Kassian LW

This was a deal made with AGM Josh Raines before he moved to the big chair in Phoenix. He was intent on making the AsHL club tougher and I was glad to move him along. He had a good run in the NHL last year, so he may one day be worth a re-rate. If he is, then I only did okay. If he does not gain a re-rate his initial ratings were poor and I came out well in this deal.

Trade #30... January 12, 2011: To Toronto: Neil Petruic D; To Columbus: $10,000

Uh... yeah... 3 D-men injured in two days led to this AsHL depth deal. Petruic ended up being a semi-regular from that point on. Ended up releasing then re-signing him in the off season.

Trade #29... December 31, 2010: To Toronto: Paul Szczechura C, Brett Sterling LW, Brett Carson D, CAR 5 2011 (Reece Scarlett D) ; To Carolina: Konstantin Pushkarev LW, Mike Mottau D

I told Mike Mottau that he would likely end up in the minors when I signed him, but after about 15 games he demanded a trade. It took me a little while, but this is what I managed to pull together. Carolina ended up flipping Mottau not too much later, but I like the return I got here. Pushkarev was not going to make it to the bigs, and was struggling in the AsHL at the time. Szczechura has been very versatile, but fairly inconsistent for the Marlies, but Brett Sterling has been excellent. He probably will never be a factor in the NsHL, but he is a very good AsHLer. Carson was servicable and has since been dealt. Scarlett had a very good year after being drafted, so this could end up being a good deal in the long run.

Trade #28... December 29, 2010: To Toronto: Chris Higgins LW and SJS 5 2011 (Philippe Hudon RW) ; To San Jose: Tomas Holmstrom LW and TOR 7 2011 (Anton Forsberg G)

And thus ended the Holmstrom era in Toronto. He stunk in San Jose, too, but Higgins had been awful for Kurt, so this deal was about trading problems for problems. I ended up trading Higgins to Atlanta-peg at the end of the year. This was an okay deal that didn't do a lot for either team.

Trade #27... November 17, 2010: To Toronto: Jean-Michel Daoust RW, Peter Leblanc C; To Carolina: Phil Oreskovic D

This was about moving some spare parts around. Daoust and Leblanc have been decent AsHLers.

Trade #26... November 14, 2010: To Toronto: BUF 5 2011 (Blake Pietella LW); To Buffalo: Noah Clarke LW, $100,000

This deal was just about making room. Pietella had a great year after I drafted him, so this may end up being a good trade.

Trade #25... November 11, 2010: To Toronto: Hannu Toivonen G, Aaron Rome D; To Detroit: Milan Jurcina D, Johan Hedberg G

Johan Hedberg had been a disappointment and Toivonen ended up being a bit of a bust. Jurcina had been very good for me, but I saw this deal as moving a 6th NsHL d-man for a very good AsHL d-man in order to upgrade my back goalie situation. Rome ended up being better than expected with a late call-up in 2011-12, while I was not unhappy to see Toivonen go at the end of the year.

Trade #24... October 13, 2010: To Toronto: Steve Eminger D and Chicago's third round pick in 2012 (Jon Gillies G); To Chicago: Ryan Callahan RW

I desperately wanted to upgrade my blueline and Callahan was the price tag. Eminger was fantastic for me, and ended up being a big piece in a big deal with Calgary, so the original deal with Calgary for Callahan just keeps paying off.

Trade #23...July 19, 2010: To Toronto: Toronto's second round pick (Alexander Petrovic D) and New Jersey's fifth round pick (Kenneth Agostino RW) in 2010 and Nashville's fourth round pick in 2011 (Olivier Archambault LW); To Nashville: Matt Stajan C.

Since Richard had dealt me Jason Spezza at the deadline he needed a center. Stajan had been my number one center prior to the deal, and with Matt Duchene set to join the club it was looking like he would fall to number 3 at best. I really like this deal for both teams. Stajan was a good fit for Nashville, and Petrovic and Agostino are among my better prospects. The 4th rounder in 2011 got flipped later.

Trade #22... July 19, 2010: To Toronto: Tomas Holmstrom LW/RW; To Atlanta: Toronto's fourth round pick in 2010 (Craig Cunningham C).

A relatively minor deal. Holmstrom looked like just what the doctor ordered, but he ended up being a total bust for me. I wouldn't mind the 4th round price if it hadn't ended up being used to pick one of my all-time favorite Giants.

Trade #21... March 15, 2010: To Toronto: Jason Spezza C; To Nashville: James Van Riemsdyk LW, Cody Franson D, Jeremy Smith G, Montreal's First Round pick in 2010 (Ryan Johansen C), Toronto's Second Round pick in 2010 (Alexander Petrovic D), Nashville's Third Round pick in 2010 (Greg McKegg C)

This deal was on again off again for a long time. Richard wanted James Neal and that just was not going to happen. It ended up costing me an extra couple of picks and a prospect or two to get him out of the deal, but we got it done with about 2 minutes to spare at the deadline. I was actually competing against Ron Jones for Spezza at one point, but then when he pulled out he encouraged me to add in the third rounder I had got from Richard the previous year. "A nice touch" I believe he called it. Turned out he was right. This was a massive price to pay, but I felt that my team would never go anywhere without a top line center, and since they don't come available too often and I had missed out in free agency the past year I felt it had to be done. Richard probably got the better of me on this deal, but I would gladly do it again.

Trade #20... March 15, 2010: To Toronto: Sergei Shirokov LW, Derek Grant C, Yan Stastny LW; To Los Angeles: Matt Cullen C, Ottawa's Third Round pick in 2010 (Sondre Olden LW)

Nate wanted Cullen and I really wanted Shirokov because he was looking like a real diamond in the rough for the home-town Canucks. I was more of a fan on this one than a GM I think. I added too much to the deal to get Shirokov and Grant, because we had been talking about one of them for Cullen and I asked for both. Yan Stastny was a throw-in because my Marlies were strong and I wanted to take a real run at the playoffs. They crapped out in the first round, Stastny returned to Europe, and Shirokov went home to Russia the following year. Good thing Ron Jones wanted him anyways. Weak trade all in all.

Trade #19... March 13, 2010: To Toronto: Ryan Callahan RW/LW, Christian Hansen RW/C, John Moore D, Montreal's First Round pick in 2010 (Ryan Johansen C); To Calgary: Sergei Samsonov LW, Blake Comeau RW/LW, Toronto's Second Round pick in 2011 (Magnus Hellberg G)

Andrew offered something similar to this deal, and I countered with a couple of offers. I believe the other offer did not include Comeau or John Moore, but this is the one he took. This deal set me up for another doozy of a deal. When Andrew wants to get a deal done, he comes in with real strong offers. Hard to believe I flipped Callahan shortly after this, as well as the draft pick... but this deal set off a domino effect that has left me in real good shape down the line.

Trade #18...February 6, 2010: To Toronto: Adam Henrique C; To Minnesota: Mike Rathje D

Terry was looking to add a big presence to the blueline and wanted Rathje. He was offering a decent prospect. I threw out several names before we finally settled on this one. This deal is one of my all-time favorites because I am a huge Henrique fan. I felt he was undervalued because of the Taylor Hall connection, so I was glad to get him. I honestly did not expect a rookie year like the one he just had, mind you. That was jus gravy.

Trade #17... February 4, 2010: To Toronto: Milan Jurcina D; To Pittsburgh: Dustin Kohn D

Dustin Kohn was making a bit of a name for himself playing for the Islanders, so when I needed a more veteran player I offered up a larger deal which Nathan Erb stripped down to this one. As it turned out Kohn kinda slipped into the shadows, so I guess I ended up on the winning end of this deal. Jurcina played real well for me down the stretch, but would not last too long as a Leaf.

Trade #16... January 21, 2010: To Toronto: Justin Courtnall LW; To Carolina $2500

Courtnall was likely being released, so I took him for next to nothing. A few years later Ron would buy him back. Go figure.

Trade #15... January 6, 2010: To Toronto: Steven Zalewski C, Nashville's 3rd round pick in 2010 (Greg McKegg C) ; To Nashville: Mike Santorelli RW and Mark Santorelli C

My first of many with Richard. He liked the Santorellis, and I was frankly confounded by them - always mixed up who was who, so when he offered to take them off my hands it made my life easier. He probably got the better of me in this deal, but Zalewski was showing signs of life this past year, so I may eventually do okay on it. The third rounder came in real handy at a later date in a deal with Richard, so I can't complain about this one.

Trade #14... December 21, 2009: To Toronto: Washington's 5th round pick in 2010 (Yasin Cisse RW) ; To Washington: Chad Kilger C, Shawn Landolt C, Staffan Kronwall D

This was a panic deal where Spencer got the better of me. I had been flogging Kilger for a long time and there were no takers. The problem was that I had somehow managed to find myself with 52 signed players. I had to get back to 50. We had a deal for a fourth rounder that was probably going to go through, but when I asked him to take a couple of contracts on, the price went down. Kilger was useful, and Kronwall did okay in the minors for him, but this was pretty much a non-deal in the long run. Mediocre deal to fix an administrative goof on my part.

Trade #13... October 26, 2009: To Toronto: Matt Cullen C ; To Atlanta: Darcy Tucker RW

I think it took Cherni about a year to get me to deal Tucker to him. We had gone back and forth so many times I was shocked when I threw out this offer on the phone and the deal was done in about 2 minutes. It turned out to be a good deal for me and a bad one for Cherni if I recall because Tucker faded fast in the sim, and Cullen was okay for me.

Trade #12... July 30, 2009: To Toronto: Noah Clarke LW, Ottawa's 3rd Round pick in 2010 (Sondre Olden W) ; To Ottawa: Ales Kotalik RW

Noah Clarke ended up being a decent player and the pick certainly didn't hurt. I ended up dealing the pick to Los Angeles in a really mediocre trade. Kotalik had to go to make room for James Neal, Nikolai Kulemin and Bobby Ryan, so I did okay here.

Trade #11... July 19, 2009: To Toronto: Calgary's 6th (Jere Sallinen W) & 7th Round (Petteri Simila G) picks in 2009, Calgary's 5th Round pick in 2010 (Mark Stone RW) ; To Calgary: New York's 4th Round pick in 2009 (Alex Velischek D)

This deal could turn out to be a real good one for me if Mark Stone ends up panning out the way it looks like he could. On the surface this was all about adding quantity over quality, but Stone could end up being one heck of a steal.

Trade #10... July 19, 2009: To Toronto: NY Islanders' 2nd (Ethan Werek C), Carolina's 5th Round (Patrick Wey D) picks in 2009 ; To NY Islanders: New Jersey's 2nd round pick (Robin Lehner G) in 2009

I was having a hell of a time making a decision on who I would take, so this bought me some time. Werek will have to get his career re-booted or else I am relying on Patrick Wey to be the star of this deal for me. Wey continues to develop well, but at the moment I have to admit that I have higher hopes for him that Werek, which makes this deal a dud.

Trade #9... July 19, 2009: To Toronto: New Jersey's 2nd (Robin Lehner G), Pittsburgh's 4th (Daniel Delisle LW/C) & Philadelphia's 6th Round picks in 2009 (Gus Young D); To San Jose: Toronto's 2nd Round pick in 2009 (Mikko Koskinen G)

My first trade at the draft must have driven Nate crazy. I kept screwing it up as I tried to send it in... but it went through, and I don't mind the deal at all. I ended up flipping the second rounder I gained for a second time. In hind sight I probably should have stopped here as Robin Lehner looks like a real good goalie prospect, but I am quite sure that he was not the next guy on my list because I was obsessed with centers that year. This deal helped to rebuild my depth, through Delisle and Young remain longer shots as prospects. Probably not my best draft-day deal.

Trade #8... July 15, 2009: To Toronto: Andre Roy LW ; To Carolina: Mike Gauthier D, Toronto's 6th Round pick 2009 (Curtis McKenzie LW)

I wanted to add a veteran tough-guy to make the AsHL club more legit, and with the thought that Roy may actually play 20 or more games in the NsHL. Didn't turn out that way, but he was a good insurance policy. He did get a call up once if I recall, but Eric Boulton ended up playing the role better for me.

Trade #7... Trade deadline 2009: To Toronto: Tampa Bay's 6th Round pick 2009 (Nick Jensen D) ; To Tampa Bay: Andrew Brunette LW

The trade deadline was a dud this year, but I made this deal with the Costello brothers. They had just taken over Tampa and had a shot at the playoffs, while I was trying to unload veterans to make room for next year. Brunette has been a good NsHL player for a long time. I probably should have gotten more, but he had a fairly large contract and was in the way for young guys. I don't mind this give-away that much, especially since Jensen remains a decent prospect.

Trade #6... April 1, 2009: To Toronto: Josh Gorges D ; To Carolina: Scott May C, Prospect Tyler Eckford D

I had happened to mention that I was adding Eckford to Ron Jones and he offered up Josh Gorges if I would throw in an AsHLer. Gorges seemed like a safer bet and was already playing in the league. Gorges is still a key member of our club - this is one of my best deals, even if it just fell into my lap.

Trade #5... March 31, 2009: To Toronto: Prospect Tyler Eckford D, Washington's 4th Round pick 2009 (Byron Froese C); To Washington: Prospect John Mitchell C/LW

Spencer was very high on John Mitchell, I liked Tyler Eckford because I needed a d-man. The added draft pick was a bonus because Eckford was still a longer term prospect while Mitchell was proving himself already.

Trade #4... March 30, 2009: To Toronto: New York Ranger's 4th Round pick 2009 (Alex Velischek D); To NY Rangers: Aaron Ward D

Rich DeChelis was looking to make a deal just ahead of the deadline. I was hoping to make several trades, but this one simply made sense. It put a veteran on a good team (uh, they went on to win the cup) and got a moderate draft pick, which I would later package up.

Trade #3... March 11, 2009: To Toronto: Denis Grebeshkov D ; To Pittsburgh: Kyle Wellwood C, Toronto's 3rd Round pick 2009 (Reilly Smith RW)

My first real trade of any significance. This one took some back and forth, but Nathan Erb came through eventually as we helped each other add to areas of concern. Grebeshkov was a huge addition. I like this deal alot.

Trade #2... March 9, 2009: To Toronto: Prospects Dan Gendur RW, Bryce Swan RW, Andrei Taratukhin LW ; To Carolina: Tyson Marsh D

Ron was looking to add a depth D-man for his farm team, I was willing to take anything. None of these prospects will ever be created in the sim. A dud of a deal.

Trade #1... February 2009: To Toronto: Patrice Brisebois D ; To Carolina: Carolina's 6th Round pick 2009 (Derek Rodwell RW)

My first trade I had turned down the day before, but I realized my defense was so terrible that I needed this deal. Brisebois ended up being one of my more reliable players for the balance of the season. Too bad he retired at the end of the year.
